As Southern California’s experts in CNC waterjet cutting composites, we’ve spent a lot of time dialing in our settings and improving our equipment to master carbon fiber, garolite G10 / FR4, Fiberglass, and other laminates. We improved from from failing 30 out of 50 hole with delamination when cutting non-drilled 1/8″ thick G10 with 1/8″ holes to 0 out of 100 after our changes. This saves money compared to predrilling pierces. The key to cutting composites without delamination is to make sure the garnet is flowing the instant the waterjet fires. While this cannot eliminate delamination from air pockets or voids it nearly (>99.99%) eliminates the delamination caused by the pierce which is far more common. The delamination happens when the waterjet stream hits a layer without enough garnet to actually cut all the way through. The water has nowhere to go so the waterjet stream will spread laterally between the layers and cause delamination.
