Waterjet cutting carbon fiber

As San Diego’s largest waterjet machine shop we’ve cut a LOT of carbon fiber!  We’ve done jobs in excess of $40,000 in raw carbon fiber cost, supplied by customers that trust us.

We’ve spent a lot of time dialing in our settings and improving our equipment to go from 30 out of 50 failures with delamination cutting non-drilled 1/8″ thick G10 (cuts like CF) with 1/8″ holes to 0 out of 100.  This saves a lot of money compared to predrilling pierces.

Potential Issues

Carbon fiber raw material quality differs greatly between suppliers.  If there is any void (bubble) the carbon fiber will delaminate as the waterjet stream pierces the bubble and spreads laterally.  There is no way to prevent this type of delamination on a waterjet.  This is why we always suggest using a high quality carbon fiber.  We’ve definitely had some junk carbon fiber provided by some customers, usually for non critical applications like custom automotive parts.  When we have a say, we always prefer to use Rock West brand Carbon fiber sheets.  You can reach out to them directly, or check with us because we may have some in stock and we receive regular shipments from them.
